This book is basically a nostalgic overview of the Canadian Whites, black and white comic books published in Canada during World War II (which for Canada dates from 1939) while import restrictions kept American comics out of the market and made a Canadian industry viable. In fact, Hirsch and Loubert focus almost exclusively on the operations of Bell Features, one of several Canadian publishers during the war, and on such characters as Nelvana of the Northern Lights and Johnny Canuck. The two authors later went on to form Nelvana Productions, the famous Toronto-based animation company.
